Cavaliers News · Baseball rallies to defeat York in Extra Innings

Congratulations to our varsity baseball team for their wild come from behind victory over the York Cougars in extra innings! Down 8-4 entering the bottom of the 7th inning, our Cavaliers scratched across 4 runs to send the game into extra innings.

For the next 4 innings there were big plays made defensively on both sides to prevent potential go ahead or winning runs from scoring. York had a chance to score the potential go ahead run with a runner on second base in the 9th with a sharp single to center field. RNE center-fielder Jason English initially bobbled the ball but quickly recovered and threw a strike to home plate to get the sliding York runner out on a close play ending their scoring opportunity.  An inning later in the 10th inning, RNE shortstop Chase Asbill led off the inning by hitting a drive over the head of York’s center-fielder but was called out on a close play at 3rd base trying to stretch a double into a triple erasing the Northeast threat for the inning.

Then came the crazy 11th inning with more drama ahead. York’s lead off batter for the inning drew a walk then on a passed ball at home plate advanced all the way to third base putting the potential go ahead run 90 feet away with no outs. With the Northeast infield drawn in for a potential play at the plate, relief pitcher Kevin Mueller buckled down and got an infield pop up for the first out followed by a line drive back to himself for out number two and finally an infield ground out to end the inning with no runs scored by York. In Northeast’s half of the 11th inning after the lead off batter of the inning made an out, Jason English got a  base hit to get things started (English had a great night at the plate going 5-6!) for Northeast. After the next batter made an out on a pop up and with third-baseman Ashley Dove at the plate with a 0 ball, 2 strike count, English then stole second base to give Northeast a runner in scoring position. The next pitch to Dove was a ball in the dirt that got past York’s catcher and English advanced to 3rd base. On the 2-2 pitch, a wild pitch from York’s pitcher allowed English to come home to score the winning run to end the game with a victory for the Cavaliers.

The Cavaliers finished the first half of Region play with a 4-1 record and will begin the second half on Thursday night against Westwood at Westwood. Come out and support our team!!!
